Barefoot & Back Roads, August 2011

Some of you get notice of this newsletter because you are either alumni or have asked to be on our mailing list. For those who are not on either, we publish these three or four times a year and celebrate the work and successes of some of our alumni (see below a short bit), at least those who have reported to us!

We have added some new workshops to our roster for 2012 to keep things fresh: Costa Rica’s Treasures; Charleston, a Southern Belle; Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye; and Paris, City of Light. Check out the Calendar page for links.

So study your own calendars and join us on one of our photo adventures. If you are waffling, read the Client Comments. They continue to blow us away!

We have updated a lot of the galleries and added new ones for our students’ work. Again, check the menu on the website.

Cancellations & Spots Open

There are spots open for Arches & Canyonlands National Parks; Lighthouses of the Outer Banks, and our alumni workshop which is being held in Death Valley this year in December. Alumni, please note that while we’ll give preference to you for Death Valley, we have opened it up to advance shooters. Those who came with us to Yosemite last December had a great time, to wit, their comments.

Posting of Tropical Impressions from Belize Exhibition

Many could not make it to our exhibition and asked if we would be posting it online. Now that the show has been taken down, ready for the next venue, you may see it in our Fine Art Galleries. While 72-ppi renditions do not do these justice, they will give you a good idea of what was in the exhibition.

Alumnae/i Success Stories

And now [drum roll] to our favorite part. We really feel proud when our alumni win awards, get juried into shows, and have published work, often with images they have made in our workshops. If you have some, please let us know, and we will celebrate them in the next newsletter.  If one of those images involved was made in one of our workshops, we will try to rotate the very best of the best of those images onto the website, if you send them in the format as noted on the Student Galleries page.  These are in order of receipt. All of the images that are shown below are part of the recently-updated Student Winners gallery.

Nat Dean
(Savannah 09, Andalucia 10, Alumni in Yosemite 10, Alumni in Death Valley 11) reported that he entered one of his images from Andalucia in his local camera club’s annual Florence Greenberg Flower Photography Award. This image took a first in his division.

Nat wrote, “The three classes then competed for the Grand Prize, which is what my father-in-law used to call a “crocheted bucket,” and mine came in – sniff! – second overall.” While first would have been nice, Nat, second is a great tribute to this photograph. Congratulations!

Later, Nat e-mailed us again, “BTW, I have sold the photo from Ronda [at a very good price, we might add] of the bee and the poppy [a variation of the photo at right]!  Also have committed to a one-man show … for the FAU Library in the fall.  That happened after the Dean of the Library came to the gallery show.” Again, Nat, that’s terrific!

Dave Robertson
(New England 07, Arches 08, Belize 10, Alumni in Yosemite 10, Costa Rica 12) was pleased to share that one of his portfolio images was chosen for the NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) portfolio page. This page displays different members’ photographs that NAPP considers worthy.

Four of the images in his portfolio are ones that he made in our workshops, including this one from Belize. Some of you may recognize Ben, the subject of this portrait, from our last newsletter!

In another e-mail, Dave wrote us that one of his images was juried into the Coastal Arts League International Juried Competition recently, and another was juried into the Santa Fe Workshops “Light” competition.

Great going, Dave! And kudos to you, too!

John Singleton
(Cascades 10, Belize 11), who has been selling prints for quite awhile now, wrote, “I put three photos up from [the workshop in] Belize in the special area of BetterPhoto.com called Masterpiece Membership. The topic for February was Window light. Three of my photos were chosen, and one took a second, … ”

We also heard from John that he was submitting this photo in another contest, but we have not yet heard where or how it was received.

In Belize, we all loved this photograph. Well done, John!

Giuseppe Tarnero
(New England 10, Lightroom 10, Costa Rica 12) sent us an invitation to the opening reception for his show in Costa Rica, Otoño Màgico (Autumn Magic). Alas, we could not go because of our workshop schedule, but we were really pleased to see that a number of photographs were ones he made in our New England Fall Foliage workshop last year.
Congratulations, Giuseppe. We wish we had been there with you to celebrate with you.

We look forward to seeing you in Arches in September and Costa Rica in February.

Jack Welch
(Outer Banks 10, Savannah 11) e-mailed, “I have been continuing with my growth and interest in photography. I was recently accepted into the Wakefield, MA Festival of the Lake (a juried art and craft show) and did fairly well (the weather was awful) selling my work. I also went to the Chihuly exhibit at the MFA and took a lot of photos.”

Jack also let us know that the photograph here took 3rd prize in the Reading, MA annual art fair contest.

He added, “I … completed the Pan Mass Challenge (a 2 day 200 mile bike ride to benefit cancer), so my photography has had to suffer a bit, but I am still doing whenever I can sneak in time. I am going to Estes Park Colorado in mid October with Jean [Jack’s fiancée) [who is presenting] some findings at a  Medical Convention, so I have hired a photographic “guide” to take me to some good locations while she is busy during the day. I look forward to doing  another workshop with you sometime next year.”

That’s all great, Jack! And we look forward to seeing you again in 2012!

J (Joyce) Pearson

(Belize 11) wrote us about a photo she made that was displayed at Image City Photo Gallery in Rochester, NY that opened in mid-June. Joyce keeps up with two other Rochester alumnae, which is nice. She also wrote, “I am wearing my BCPA hat proudly!” That’s wonderful about your image being selected for the gallery show, Joyce!

Another e-mail came from J, in which she noted, “An image I made in Belize was at a Community Gallery, with about 95 pieces from Camera Rochester photo group. It is more low key than the gallery where my bleeding hearts photo hung, called Image City Photo Gallery, but I still enjoyed the exposure, and the chance to become familiar with all the naming, printing, pricing, applying, etc. The ICPG gallery is very nurturing to those of us who want to progress in our photo skills, with monthly critiques where the owner/partners review and advise on the three shots you can submit for each session. It is different from the judging at Camera Rochester, and is more of a learning process.

Michelle Turner
(Canyon de Chelly 09, Arches 09, Sicily 10, Maine 11) had quite a surprise. As she said, “… the Rochester camera club (Camera Rochester) gave out their end of year annual awards for the most points accumulated for all the ten monthly competitions. Last year I took third place in the small color prints category. This year I took first!!

“As you know I didn’t get serious about photography until a couple years ago when I traveled with you for two weeks in the southwest. This year some of the images I took with you in Sicily were among the winning images. Thanks for all of your encouragement and helpful instruction both in camera and in processing using Lightroom. It’s obviously had a huge impact. Thanks so much.” You are very welcome, Michelle. It has been wonderful not only watch your work grow, but see it take prizes and awards in your club (that, by the way, includes both professional and amateur photographers). Once again, congratulations!

In a subsequent e-mail, Michelle reported that this image is now hanging in the annual spring juried show the club has at one of the local Barnes + Noble stores that has a large room they offer to local arts groups.  Michelle is on a roll!

Melanie Shalam
(Cascades 09, Lighthouses 09, Andalucia 11) talked about a course she was doing in New York City. Arnie gave her a suggestion that really worked out well, to wit what she reported.

“Just wanted to let you know I just finished my class at ICP … for my final project I finally (Arnie will laugh; it was due when we were in Spain) wrote a statement and showed ten photos from Plaza de Toros. My class loved the photographs; they were really blown away!
Thanks again! Miss you guys.” You’re very welcome, Mel. The class should have been blown away, as your images were stunning. Congratulations on doing such a great job on your project!

Sandy Wittman
(Maine 08, Outer Banks 09, New England 09, Savannah 11, Alumni in Death Valley 11) let us know that one of her images was published in The Daily Herald newspaper, the paper of the northern Chicago Suburbs.

That’s great, Sandy! You’ve had several of your photos published now!

Any Others?
Any others of you alumnae/i out there who have Student Winners? We’d love to celebrate them with everyone here. Be sure to follow the guidelines for BCPA photos on the Student gallery page.
