Information for People & Culture of Belize

Cost:  $1,900
Discounts for early birds, BCPA alumni, and members of ASMP, NANPA, and OWAA (proof required).
Transportation, lodging, meals, and personal expenses are the responsibility of the participants.

PayPal Methods Payments:
We accept cash and credit card payments through PayPal. Please e-mail a copy of your completed Application pages so we can coordinate it with your payment/acceptance.

Trip Insurance:

We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. Travelex Insurance Services is a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating, where most of the good companies rate a mere A or A-.  Squaremouth.com, a leading comparison site, rates Travelex very high amongst those it lists.  There are six plans.  For a lot more information and the name of our contact person, click here.  Meanwhile, suffice it to say that our travel agent has used Travelex for years.

Accommodations: (Enable pop-up windows for links to work.)
We have blocked the ten cabanas at a wonderful, eco-friendly lodge set on the gentle Moho River through September.  After that, they will open up to the public.  Please note, that there are no other practical options for lodging and February was fully booked in 2010!
           Cotton Tree Lodge
           PO Box 104
           Punta Gorda
           Toledo, Belize
           Central America
           501-670-0557 (not for reservations)

The rates listed below for the thatched cabanas, include all transfers to/from Punta Gorda (in daylight by boat if the weather is good), meals, bottled water/juice products, and unlimited guided walks, vehicle tours, horseback riding, and kayaking. Alcoholic beverages, laundry ($12 BZ/load washed and dried), and personal items are, of course, at your own cost. We have room for only ten (10) participants (plus their spouses or SOs) for this photo adventure, so book early! We have already made our reservations!

Cotton Tree Lodge has given Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures the same rate as last year through June 30.  As of July 1, the rates will increase. To take advantage of our negotiated rates, call 1-866-480-4534, east-coast time, and let Holly or Jeff know you are with Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures.

Old rates for BCPA participants through June 30, 2010
Single Occupancy $200.00/person/night + 9.6% tax
Double Occupancy $150.00/person/night + 9.6% tax
New rates as of July 1, 2010
Single Occupancy $225.00/person/night + 9.6% tax
Double Occupancy $175.00/person/night + 9.6% tax

These rates will also apply if you wish to come earlier and stay later.

And yes, there is Wi-Fi access in the main lodge! Remember, however, we are in the jungle, so the Satellite sometimes goes out!

Travel Agent:
Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time consuming as we all search for the best fare.  We have a travel agent that we can highly recommend — Ilene Cox. She is delightful and savvy and has been a travel agent for over 25 years.  She also has access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.

In addition, Ilene has traveled extensively through Europe, Asia and Africa. So, for help with international air and travel-related questions, call Ilene Cox at 800-339-8417 on the west coast.  It is not our custom to recommend outside travel resources, so this lets you know how highly we regard Ilene.

Airport:
The nearest major Airport is in Belize City (BZE) which has direct flights from Charlotte, Newark, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas. From Belize City, it is a short, domestic plane ride to the Punta Gorda airport (PND).  An alternative is to fly into Cancun

The Lodge provides transportation from/to the Punta Gorda airport as part of your cabana rate. If it is daylight and good weather, you might even be transported by boat on the river, a 45-minute trip!

Flying with Photo Equipment:
It is always good to check with TSA and your airline before traveling by air.  Currently, TSA regulations note:

"You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint.  The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight.  Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport."

They do remind everyone that not all airlines will allow this, so you may want to select your airline based on thier willingness to work with photographers...

"Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport."

If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee.

Always check back with the TSA website for the latest updates!

Rental Cars:
Since all transportation is included in your lodge rate, there is no need for a rental car!
