Join our five-day photography workshop in the incomparable Canyon de Chelly
in Navajoland in northeast Arizona near the four-corner region. This part of
the Southwest is amazing with the second largest canyon in the US, the oldest,
continuously-operating trading post on Navajoland nearby, and a history that
goes back to the Anasazi, as evidenced by the many ancient ruins set into the red,
sandstone cliffs. Here, you'll be able to celebrate
your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn
about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.
The Navajo live here now and have for centuries. DNA testing has shown that
they are direct descendents of the Anasazi. You may see small children scampering
down barely-discernible trails in the cliffs to visit an aunt or uncle along
the Chinle Wash (river) near the old hogan. Corn and squash in Navajo gardens
add color along the Wash. Stately Cottonwood trees in their copper fall colors
offer shade.
Since we are in the Navajo nation, the only way to access the inner canyon
(upper part of Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto) is with a Navajo guide.
For one of the days, we have again arranged for one of the best private guides
and 4WDs (with plenty of room for camera gear) for an intimate tour of the
inner canyons. Our guide is a story teller who has won contests for his delivery
of traditional Navajo stories. He has his degree in social anthropology and
has extensive knowledge of geology. His ancestors have been living in the
canyon for centuries.
This is one of The Barefoot Contessa's favorite spots in the world, and she
can't wait to return.
We'll be based in Chinle, Arizona in Navajoland, and since there are
only three hotels in town, it's best to book early!
Scouting Option:
For those who want more time with Margo and Arnie, we offer the opportunity to scout and shoot with them before most of our domestic workshops. We limit this to two people per day who ride in the car with the instructors. During these days, there is lots of one-to-one instruciton while Arnie and Margo do their own photography and final scouting for the workshop.
Some of our participants like to come in a day ahead and get some added instruction on Lightroom. Contact us for details.
Practical Details:
We start out with some technical information before heading out for our first afternoon of photography. Our workshops include the following:
Maximum 6-to-1 ratio students to instructors
Opening wine-and-pizza reception;
Primer booklet to help you get started;
Early-morning and late-afternoon shoots;
Mid-day downloading of your images and processing with the latest version

Lots of individual instruction in both the field and classroom;

If you have not already done so, be sure to check our FAQs for
questions you may have as well as equipment and installed downloads you need
to bring to the workshop including, if necessary, the free, 30-day, trial versions
of Adobe products.
You will also receive written instructions on the ins and outs of successfully and easily turning your favorite digital
images into beautiful prints straight out of the latest version of Lightroom using your own printer.
Cost: $980 +~$110 fee for Navajo guides & 4WDs** **Because no one can access the inner Canyons
without a Navajo guide, there is an additional fee of approximately $110 — payable
in cash and includes gratuity — for our private guides and 4WDs for a whole
day. We will update this information when we get 2010 prices.
