We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. You don't want to be cut off if you get sick before or during a trip and find that you have no recource or support. Click here for a link to a page we have written specifically on travel insurance.

You will want to make sure that the company you select is a BBB Accreduted business with an A+ rating. Links for this are here.

Our travel agent, Sharon Erickson, is savvy and finds the best rates for you depending upon your needs. When you contact her, please mention Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. Accommodations: (Links require pop-up windows.)

Tour in Canyon de Chelly:
** Because no one can access most of the canyon floor without a Navajo guide, there is an additional fee — payable in cash — for our private tour with an award-winning Navajo story teller whom we know. Not only does he understand our perspectives and needs as photographers, but he will get us to the prime locations to take advantage of the gorgeous early-morning and late-afternoon/evening light.  His family has lived in the canyon for many generations, and we have access to one of the prime locations, owned by his family, that is off limits to other tours.

He keeps his fee down for us. The last time, it was $125 + 5% tax for the day, which included two, four-hour sessions. Again, a tip is always appreciated, as he has an assistant who is already quite a story teller in his own right.

Airport:
The nearest major Airport is Senator Clark Airport (GUP) in Gallup, NM, about an hour and forty minutes away from our headquarters. Other possibilities are:

  • Four Corners Regional Airport (FMN)in Farmington, NM about two and three-quarters hours from our headquarters in Chinle;
  • Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) in AZ, a bit over three hours distant; and
  • Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ) in NM, a bit under four hours distant.
    Another option
We encourage our participants to share a car with others, as it keeps costs down, is better for the environment, and is more companionable. Let us know if you are interested, and we will help you coordinate.

Travel Agent:
Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time consuming as we all search for the best fare.  We have two travel agents that we can highly recommend — Cheryl Darwell or her associate Sharon Erickson at Cheryl-CruisePlanners.com in West End, NC. They are both also American Express agents. They are both well traveled and are very savvy in so much more than just cruises. They have access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.

With domestic fares, she does need to charge a fee, but for many, it is well worth it. Call Paula at 978-372-0226 on the east coast or e-mail her.  It is not our custom to recommend outside travel resources, so this lets you know how highly we regard Paula.

So, particularly for help with international air, train, and travel-related questions, call Cheryl or Sharon at at 877-693-4535 (East Coast) or e-mail them as noted above.

Please note that in cases where we negotiate special rates with our hotels, you must either book through our travel agent, or use our links and make your reservations yourself. This information is noted for each workshop under Accommodations above.

It is always good to check with your airline before traveling to make sure you are complying with their current rules. Alas, TSA no longer has guidelines and passes consumers along to their airline of choice. Be prepared to do some deep digging.

We NEVER check our camera gear; nor do we ever check our laptops. The airlines will not cover these, and even if they did, you would be up a creek without those items. Common sense dictates that you allow plenty of extra time should TSA ask you to empty your bag and sift through each item one by one.

You may also want to select your airline based on its willingness to work with photographers...

Remember, you may have to check your bag plane-side before boarding smaller aircraft. We have done this numerous times over the decades without any problems ... knock on wood!

If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee.

Finally, too many people bring too much gear. The less you worry about your gear, the more you will see what is around you.

Because we stop in locations where the roads and streets may be narrow and parking minimal, we encourage, in fact insist on, car sharing. It is also friendlier to our environment.

If you are interested in sharing a rental car with others, let us know. We'll pool those who respond and get you in touch with one another to make your own plans.

We can't guarantee that there will be takers, so we also recommend that you rent a car, as you can always cancel later. That way, you won't find your car of choice no longer available.
