We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. Travelex Insurance Services is a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating, where most of the good companies rate a mere A or A-. Squaremouth.com, a leading comparison site, rates Travelex very high amongst those it lists. There are six plans. For a lot more information and the name of our contact person, click here. Meanwhile, suffice it to say that our travel agent has used Travelex for years. Accommodations: () Since there are only three hotels in Chinle, rooms go quickly, so if you are even faintly considering joining us, make your reservations early; you can always cancel later. We will be staying at the smoke-free Thunderbird Lodge Highway 191 & Rural Route 7 Chinle, AZ 86503 When you make your reservations at 1-928-674-5841, be sure to mention Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. They also give AARP discounts. Other options, listed alphabetically, are: Best Western Canyon de Chelly Inn (3 miles from Thunderbird) 100 Main Street Chinle, Arizona 86503 1-928-674-5874 Holiday Inn Canyon de Chelly (1 mile from Thunderbird) Garcia Trading Post Chinle, AZ 86503 1-928-674-5000 or 1-800-315-2605 Other hotels are too far away to be practical, but there are also campgrounds: Spider Rock Campground (10 miles from our headquarters — tents, RV campers, & hogans) South Rim Canyon Drive Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Chinle, AZ 1-928-674-8261 Airport: The nearest major Airport is in Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ) in NM, a bit under four hours distant. Another option is Senator Clark Airport (GUP) in Gallup, NM, about two hours away from our headquarters. One other possibility is the Four Corners Regional Airport (FMN) in Farmington, NM about three hours from Chinle. Flying with Photo Equipment: It is always good to check with TSA and your airline before traveling by air. Currently, TSA regulations note: "You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint. The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight. Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport." They do remind everyone that not all airlines will allow this, so you may want to select your airline based on thier willingness to work with photographers... "Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport." If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee. Always check back with the TSA website for the latest updates! Rental Cars: Because we stop in locations where the roads and streets may be narrow and parking minimal, we encourage car sharing. If you are interested in sharing a rental car with others, let us know. We'll pool those who respond and get you in touch with one another to make your own plans. We can't guarantee that there will be takers, so we also recommend that you rent a car, as you can always cancel later. That way, you won't find your car of choice no longer available.
