The Introduction
Cuba Cultural Travel is an organization that has specialized in travel to Cuba since 1998. The Obama administration passed an executive order making it easier for Americans to visit Cuba. OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control, a branch of the U.S. Department of the Treasury) has issued licenses to a select number of tour companies to operate what are known as People-to-People trips, and Cuba Cultural Travel is one of them. We have worked with them to tailor our people-to-people, cultural exchanges to the cultural and visual interests of our group.
We will be based in the heart of Old Havana, the capital of the country and its commercial and cultural center since colonial times. Here, we will experience the wonderful, rustic, photogenic charm of a city that has remained largely unchanged for over 50 years. We will meet the Cuban people and learn about daily life both in this amazing, complex city and in nearby towns to which we will travel to see special, cultural treasures. That said, Havana is the main focus of our trip, the center for art, music (jazz), dance (ballet and flamenco), and film, and what many consider to be the most beautiful city in the Caribbean, complete with fading paint, cracking stonework, old cars, and wonderful faces to photograph. This is an ideal trip for your spouse or significant other, as there will plenty for them to do and see.
Setting the Stage
Sign-ups have already started for 2014, so if you want to join us, you will need to fill out your preliminary application right away, as acceptances are on a first-come/first-serve basis. As soon as you hear from us that you have been accepted, you will need to fill out the official, Cuba Cultural Travel application (that we will e-mail to you) and send in your $1,000 deposit/per person (credit cards not accepted because of US sanctions). Check the Click here for more information link at the top of this page for details.
Everyone will meet in Miami the morning of the first Friday and head for Cuba on a charter flight. You will return the following Friday afternoon, so if you are flying in, we recommend you arrive Thursday before your trip and head back home the Saturday after you return to Miami in case of delays.
You will get a detailed itinerary, but please note that there will be plenty of opportunity to photograph. The itinerary, however, must be OKed by both OFAC and the Cuban government, so it will be worded according to certain guidelines. For example, as much as time permits, we will have meetings where we can socialize and share stories and images both amongst ourselves and with our Cuban friends. That said, know that our schedule is pretty full, so you can experience as much as possible of Cuba in our short time there. Also note, this is a people-to-people cultural tour designed for photographers and their guests rather than a regular photo workshop.
Cuba has a rich and varied cultural heritage. Since the revolution (the new government was put in place in January of 1959), there has been an aggressive program of cultural reforms that has promoted artistic talent on the island. The result is a highly respected collection of art, music, and dance institutions and academies that have gained international acclaim. Even in the face of economic difficulties, Cuba continues to place a high value on artistic creativity and maintains its cultural integrity.
During our stay, we will be hosted by a variety of local scholars and artists who will offer in-depth commentary on art, music, dance, photography, architecture, history, and religion. We will meet and be able to photograph many leading artists, musicians, dancers, and fellow photographers in their studios, attend private dance and music performances and enjoy the company of students, professors, and historians. Throughout our tour we will enjoy the type of intimate, personal exchanges that build lifelong relationships.
This trip will not only bring us together with the wonderful, friendly, open people of Cuba, but will enable us to develop friendships and a new understanding of the rich and varied cultural fabric of this unique island nation. A true people-to-people exchange! Our time in Cuba in 2013 was amazing, and we cannot wait to return.
