Trip Insurance:

We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. Travelex Insurance Services is a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating, where most of the good companies rate a mere A or A-.  Squaremouth.com, a leading comparison site, rates Travelex very high amongst those it lists.  There are six plans.  For a lot more information and the name of our contact person, click here.  Meanwhile, suffice it to say that our travel agent has used Travelex for years.

Travel Help:
If you do not feel comfortable making reservations in a foreign country, The Barefoot Contessa will be happy to help you negotiate the best price for a car, train, and/or hotel for a fee of $100 that includes all overseas calls. The $100 will be more than compensated by the money you save. And it is easier when one speaks the language, as I do. If you want to try yourself (remember, any discount is accorded to only those who book directly with the hotel), there are assorted translation sites, including Yahoo's Babel Fish and Google Translate, and while the freebies aren't perfect, they can help the linguistically challenged.

Accommodations: (Enable pop-up windows for links to work.)
We have negotiated a 10% discount off the room rates at:
          Hôtel Adelie
          1, rt de Bligny
          21200 Montagny les Beaune, FRANCE
          Reservations by E-mail
          011-33-3-80-22-37-74

In order to quality for the 10% discount, you must make reservations directly with the hotel and be sure to mention "Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures." These rates are for stays of at least five days, perfect for our workshop. If you want to come earlier and stay later, you will still get the discount. Conversions can me made through XE.com.

If you wish breakfast, add another 9,40€, including tax, well worth it, as it consists of fruit, yogurt, ham and cheeses, cereals, juices, coffee, tea (herbal, too), hard-boiled eggs, and a great assortment of breads (baguettes, croissants, etc.) and jams, either outside on the terrace if it's a nice morning, or inside in their friendly dining area.

For those who rent a car, parking is free, as long as you use the space in front of your own unit. This is a bonus, as many hotels in France charge 5-10€/day for parking. Again, check for updated conversions.

We have now stayed here several times and could not be more pleased with the accommodations, service, great breakfasts, and charming hosts. Conveniently located near Beaune with easy access to all our locations, this is a great base for us, so it is important that you make your reservations early. If you miss out on Hôtel Adelie, check for other accommodations in and around the village or in Beaune.

Travel Agent:
Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time consuming as we all search for the best fare.  We have a travel agent that we can highly recommend — Ilene Cox. She is delightful and savvy and has been a travel agent for over 25 years.  She also has access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.

In addition, Ilene has traveled extensively through Europe, Asia and Africa. So, for help with international air and travel-related questions, call Ilene Cox at 800-339-8417 on the west coast.  It is not our custom to recommend outside travel resources, so this lets you know how highly we regard Ilene.

Airport:
The nearest major Airport is St-Exupéry (LYS) in Lyon, over an hour and a half away, but those who wish to visit the City of Lights may want to consider flying into Charles de Gaulle (CDG) just outside Paris and drive the three-plus hours down or take the TGV (Train de Grand Vitesse, or high-speed train) from there to Beaune with a stop in Lyons, a total trip of 3 hours and 40 minutes. The round trip price per person in 2008 was 39.70€/~$57.92 US or 75.40€/~$110 US per couple, a slight break. US conversions from Euros were done in December. There are also several other options for travel beween CDG and Paris. Other air options include flying into Geneva, Switzerland (GVA), about two and a half hours away by car.

Flying with Photo Equipment:
It is always good to check with TSA and your airline before traveling by air.  Currently, TSA regulations note:

"You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint.  The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight.  Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport."

They do remind everyone that not all airlines will allow this, so you may want to select your airline based on thier willingness to work with photographers...

"Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport."

If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee.

Always check back with the TSA website for the latest updates!

Rental Cars:
Because we stop in out-of-the-way locations, and because the roads are narrow with minimal parking, we encourage participants to pool transportation with us. Contact us ASAP if you are interested, and we'll let you know the approximate cost. Besides being practical, it's a blast traveling with others in the group. I can't tell you how much and how hard we laughed last summer!
