Workshop Client Comments We have been touched and gratified by the many thank-you notes and comments we have received from both our participants and those whom we fondly call our "spousal units," to wit: "Death Valley is a wondrous place, but much more so when seen with and through the eyes of great photographers! "Frankly, I think that the best experience was when I was by myself when you were in the dunes. I got into a flow and began to look for and see things that would go unnoticed by most people. And you were not there to hold me by the hand. The same thing happened when I shot the caboose, though I know that you are not crazy about HDR. Still I find HDR challenging and believe that with careful planning and post processing, I may achieve excellent results. I am not there yet. At my age it is important to have some projects or goals to achieve next year." George wrote a note to the whole group later... "I am glad that Margo sent out the email addresses as I wanted to thank you for helping to make the Death Valley workshop so memorable for me. I had been there before as part of another workshop and can assure you that our experience was far superior and enjoyable, at least for me. You were most understanding and I regret having to have missed a number of the critiques as these are an important part of any workshop. The work produced on this workshop surpassed that of other workshops that I have attended which attests to the fact that we have all learned and gained from our experience with Margo and Arnie. During the critiques each day it was amazing how everyone's remarks were sought out, especially those of the non-photographers, and Margo in particular made sure that we all participated in the process. "Even my husband's sketches were noticed and he came away planning to do more drawing here at home. We both feel as though we have made 14 new friends whom we look forward to seeing again, and I learned so much in five days that my head is still spinning; I know I will use it all over time as I continue to grow and improve my photography. You were so considerate of those of us in the Social Security age range who may not be in top physical condition, and I was very much impressed by your attention to our well-being and safety among the rocks and high desert of Arches and Canyonlands. I had noticed Arnie's gentle concern for another participant, and because of a kind, helping hand from Margo, I was able to climb up that nasty ridge line despite my fear to photograph Delicate Arch at sunset, and even better, make it down again! You two make a wonderful team, as teachers, photographers, coaches and friends. "Merci!" Giuseppe Tarnero, San Jose, COSTA RICA "Margo and Arnie.......Thanks again for a wonderful experience! I must admit that I came into the class with a good deal of trepidation. Mary had surprised me with a gift of the D300s almost two years ago. I diligently studied a couple of books specifically written about the camera, did some online study, and worked with the camera on a trip to Palm Springs in anticipation of the Bryce-Zion trip last year. We purchased Lightroom and were just starting to work with it in preparation for the trip when Voila! The house sold, and you know the story on that. In any case, with everything involved in a move, we had very little time for any prep for the Arches and Canyonlands trip. "Mary urged that we just relax and enjoy ourselves, try to learn something, and if nothing else see the vistas. This sounded great, but when I walked into the classroom on the first day and found that there were other attendees that had attended several of your classes, and began to absorb how intensive the schedule was going to be, much of my resolve left me. "After the first afternoon shoot and the first morning shoot I was feeling very overwhelmed; however, as the week wore on I became more confident (in spite of problems with the camera, which usual turned out to be operater error). The coaching and personal attention — and in some cases some quick work in Lightroom while I watched :-) — you both provided was very helpful and very much appreciated... "I found your coaching and help in the field to be really helpful to me. The fact that the two of you have your own different approach to things was interesting. When shooting with Margo, her technique helped me to look at things from, in some cases, radically different perspectives. With Arnie, when I was having trouble actually finding the right shot (at least for me), the subtle pointing in a possible direction, letting me work on it, and then coming back to me and suggesting a variety of things to try in order to get that "keeper" was especially enlightening to me. With both of you it was a good combination of help and cutting me loose that really let me start to grasp what you were talking about. On the other hand, when I got into trouble or wasn't "getting it" when time was of the essence, (as with the early-morning "elbows out" shoot, you didn't hesitate to jump in and set things right for me and others so that we could get the shot. At times I felt like I was getting more than my share of attention from you, but then when I was nearby one or more of the moew proficient folks in the class and saw that they were also getting the same attention, I felt better! "I also found the critique sessions to be invaluable. Guiseppe had mentioned early on while driving us around that he thought this was a very important tool, and he was right. To hear what others had to say and then finish off with your professional perspective was enlightening. The first time around was a little scary for me, but the comments by the other students as well as yours showed me that I would be able to at least get a couple of decent shots, and in some case one or two that drew some pretty good praise! "In addition to being able to exert a little control over my camera rather than it controlling me, I really think the two most important things that stuck with me are to remember the light and to look around not just scan, but to really look and see the possibilities. Some of what I consider my best photos were as a result of being set up or looking at one thing and then suddenly seeing another which might have been a totally different subject or perspective, but because of the light and actually seeing something cool, resulted in a keeper!" Barry Key, Washington, USA "The Maine workshop this summer was my 6th with BCPA. The workshop was full, 12 particcipants, which meant more – more ideas, more enthusiasm, more critiques, more to respond to for both students and teachers, all of which was shared. The range of focus at these workshops extends from how to approach a potential human subject, protecting your camera from rain (yes, you can get great shots in the rain), composition of course, to the most technical details for post processing in Lightroom and beyond. "To pack this all in we started with fishing boats before daybreak and ended with lighthouses after dark. "Intense? Yes. Worth it? Very. Fun? Always!" Joanie Alexander, North Carolina, USA "Hi! Both will have a huge impact on your learning which will show in the photographs that you make and the enjoyment you get from photography. "Scouting/Shooting with Margo and Arnie was the foundation that I needed since digital photography was new to me. We also went to a beautiful location that was not practical for a group the size of a workshop. An opportunity to photograph in this secluded location with the setting sun, the shell covered shore line, the waves rushing by the trees, alone was worth the $. "The last day several participants had to leave early. The chance to see how each participant's photography had evolved was amazing. And the opportunity to get feedback one more time was invaluable. Staying one extra night was worth it. "As you consider registering for a workshop, also consider making the most of it by registering for the scouting/shooting option and make your reservations so you can stay for the entire length of the workshop." Jeanette Hendrych, Arizona, USA "Shortly after Margo and Arnie arrived at Cotton Tree Lodge I commented to Arnie how relaxed Margo seemed. "'It's because she's here,' he replied. Their second workshop at Cotton Tree, and they were so at home. All energy expended was for engaging us, their students, with the people and culture of Belize. "I spend months each year at this lodge where i am developing a primitive pottery studio. Traveling the Toledo district, village by village, during their workshop, I was challenged by Arnie and Margo to find ways of expressing photographically the feelings, friendships and beauty I was experiencing. And just when we thought we had captured the scene, you came along and raised the bar, to consider yet another point of view. You were always, always encouraging and pushing us to do it better. "The day after I returned, the chair of my board at work wrote me to say her father was in hospice care, with perhaps one to two weeks left to live. I asked her if she would like me to take some hand portraits. She was eager to do this and appreciative for this opportunity. For me, it was a chance to apply some of the new lessons learned with you. Instead of going in and firing off a quick series of frames, I encouraged conversation, asking what memories her dad's hands evoked. She and her dad had a ritual of making the ASL sign for 'I love you.' then intertwining their fingers in this pose. They also enjoyed arm wrestling. These stories provided a point of departure for making more interesting shots, side views, etc. "Then her son arrived to have hand photos made with his grandfather. This young man had trained as a Marine and is now with the Rochester Police Department. Despite his burly exterior, he held his grandfather's hand with gentleness — that soft touch we were talking about in the workshop — and I took a more active role in re-positioning, having him cup the fingers more naturally, tucking in the errant thumb. What used to be a 10-minute hit-and-run turned into a comforting hour, filled with reminiscence. Thanks for giving me the insights into making this a more meaningful experience for everyone involved. By the end of the workshop I realized that my work was flat and uninteresting because I approached a location in two dimensions as a spectator on the sidelines. I centered all my subjects and, as Margo pointed out, I couldn’t shoot straight [horizon lines were all aslant]. BUT... "What Margo and Arnie taught me was that to produce photographs as art, you must project yourself through the camera lens into the center of the scene and immerse yourself in the experience. Once I understood that, my vision expanded to encompass all 360 degrees as well as up and down, freeing me to capture my own unique vision of the three-dimensional experience and embark on the road to becoming a better photographer. The marked improvement in my work at my second workshop at Arches nine months later was gratifying and reflected the lessons learned from the first one. In just a short period of time, our group had become a close 'family.' Laughing together, laughing at each other, supporting each other, enjoying meals together, sharing past history and stories. And the information I learned from you Arnie on the Kelvin Scale helped when that sunset just didn't happened and I had the time to play around and get a decent shot from nothing. "And yes, I learned to appreciate those early mornings and late nights when, because of Maine's ridiculously early sunrises, I had to get up at some dreadful hour to drive 1 1/2 hours to Port Clyde Lighthouse to try and catch it. As I watched the sunrise off to the side I continued shooting that glow that we were always trying to catch. And yes I was very happy with the results I got. " Same thing when on a rainy, overcast day, I returned to Portland Head Light for a sunset that I never thought would happen. I waited with another photographer for 2 hours as the sky began to glow and a fantastic sunset occurred. It wasn't where I wanted it, but as I learned for your workshop, I walked in all directions, shot from all sides, and remembered to always look over my shoulder, because even though the sunset wasn't there where I needed it, the beautiful glowing sky was. I was totally unprepared for the connection we made with the group, the people of Belize, and the countryside in just over a week. "The set-up in an eco-lodge in the jungle put us into a wild, new world with howler-monkey wake-up calls at 4:30 a.m., but it was access to the real lives of Mayan people that was even more unusual. Uncomfortable with the thought of paparazzi snapping the locals, I was pleased with the arrangements to visit people in their thatched homes, talk with them about their lives, and participate in activities such as chocolate making. Cameras clicked, but so did people. "The waterfalls and ruins were stunning – and I found travel with laggard photographers means I see everything a little more closely, too. "Thanks to Margo and Arnie for setting a tone of earnest learning and good humor – and thanks to Charlotte [wife of another participant] for being an accomplice to play when others turned to 'chimping.'" It was full-on, long days with a little bit of a roller-coaster ride along the way, but I felt that I walked away with some of the best shots that I’d taken in my life, and more importantly — passion renewed! As I started to process some of the photos that were taken on this trip, I became aware of the real value that I had received. "Throughout the 3 photo adventures with you guys, there was a great diversity of different subjects to photograph. (Literally, hundreds during the 3 trips). Each had its own challenges. "What makes me enjoy these trips is the help that one or both of you give to me in how to approach the situation that confronts me. Often, there is a suggestion to approach the challenge from a different perspective from my original one. Frequently, I use my approach along with the one from you all. This allows me to compare and evaluate each, giving me a chance to study and determine which best suits my ideas of photography. "The bottom line is that I now have a collection of over a 1,000 photos from various places covering various subjects, many of which I can show with confidence because of the advice from both of you." When I was with the group last week, I did not hate anyone or anything, even when I was not feeling well, and I did not use a bad word all week. Looking around, I realized that everyone had powerful cameras . . . multiple lenses . . . filters . . . and I had my little compact Canon G10. And I'll never forget how you both laughed with approval when you saw my heavy duty tripod with my little camera. "But by the end of the week, I proudly carried my heavy duty tripod and Canon G10 to our photo shoots, and my insecurities completely changed. While I may not be able to do everything they can do, I can certainly produce something satisfying to me. And that's what it's all about. Making pictures that make me happy. "And I was very happy when I left, although very tired. I had a great time learning about making pictures and getting to know you both. Getting up close and personal with nature in a beautiful location is an excellent way to sightsee, bond with my camera, and grow as a photographer. "I'm a little banged up. My hands are bruised and cut up from adjusting my tripod, and I have braces on both knees today. Ibuprofen rocks! "Thanks and see you again soon! For me it came down to this. When we are encouraged to look beyond what we immediately see that attracts our eye photographically, that experience comes into play the next time we go and shoot and enables us to take a wider view of creative possibilities. " I like to use analogies. This reminds me of the physical joints in our bodies. When young they are flexible, with a wide range of motion. As we age, that flexibility and range diminishes. If an effort is made to stretch and extend that range through exercise, it may pay off in improved use of that joint. So, following that thinking, you are a fitness club for creative vision ;-). Class sizes are designed to allow the instructors to provide the maximum one-on-one personal attention to each student's needs. They have an uncanny eye for seeing what the student needs, in both the field and the lab, and guiding that person into creating the image they saw in their vision. We came away with a greatly enhanced knowledge of working with light and how to effectively make the subject of the image the "hero" it was intended to be. "In addition to all of the above and the countless other photography-related knowledge we were taught, we met two of the best people one can ever meet.
