We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. You don't want to be cut off if you get sick before or during a trip and find that you have no recource or support. Click here for a link to a page we have written specifically on travel insurance.

You will want to make sure that the company you select is a BBB Accreduted business with an A+ rating. Links for this are here.

Our travel agent, Sharon Erickson, is savvy and finds the best rates for you depending upon your needs. When you contact her, please mention Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. Accommodations: (Links require pop-up windows.)

We have negotiated a very attractive rate of $169 plus approximately 13% tax and a city surcharge of $1/night. This includes $10 breakfast voucher/night. Valet parking is $12/day.

To take advantage of this rate, be sure to call and let them know that you are with Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. Our block of rooms will be held until February 18, 2015 for the smoke-free

      DoubleTree Hotel Savannah Historic District
      411 West Bay Street
      Savannah, Georgia  31401
      (912) 790-7000 phone

If rooms are available, these rates will be honored just before and after the workshop as long as reservations are made by the cut-off date. It's good to remember that making a reservation doesn't mean you have to pay for it until closer to the arrival date.<br />

In cases such as this workshop location, the room rate actually includes our daily imaging room. Normally, that room incurs a hefty fee. So unless you are local, please join the rest of your fellow participants. Otherwise, expect to pay a surcharge of up to $75. This obviously will cost a lot more than a few dollars saved with Expedia or other booking sites. Besides, it is more fun and more practical for carpooling if we all stay in the same location.

For those who miss out on the our selected inn, check other possibilities in and around Savannah, B&Bs.

The nearest major Airport is Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV).

Travel Agent:
Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time consuming as we all search for the best fare.  We have a travel agent that we can highly recommend, Sharon Erickson at Cheryl-CruisePlanners.com in West End, NC. She is also an American Express agent. Well traveled, she is so much more than just an organizer and finder of cruises. At Cruise Planners, they have access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.

With domestic fares, Sharon does need to charge a fee, but for many, it is well worth it. Call Sharon at at 877-693-4535 (East Coast) or e-mail her as noted above.

Please note that in cases where we negotiate special rates with our hotels, you must either book through our travel agent, or use our links and make your reservations yourself. This information is noted for each workshop under Accommodations above.

It is always good to check with your airline before traveling to make sure you are complying with their current rules. Alas, TSA no longer has guidelines and passes consumers along to their airline of choice. Be prepared to do some deep digging.

We NEVER check our camera gear; nor do we ever check our laptops. The airlines will not cover these, and even if they did, you would be up a creek without those items. Common sense dictates that you allow plenty of extra time should TSA ask you to empty your bag and sift through each item one by one.

You may also want to select your airline based on its willingness to work with photographers...

Remember, you may have to check your bag plane-side before boarding smaller aircraft. We have done this numerous times over the decades without any problems ... knock on wood!

If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee.

Finally, too many people bring too much gear. The less you worry about your gear, the more you will see what is around you.

Rental Cars:
Because we stop in locations where the roads and streets may be narrow and parking minimal, we encourage, in fact insist on, car sharing. It is also friendlier to our environment.

If you are interested in sharing a rental car with others, let us know. We'll pool those who respond and get you in touch with one another to make your own plans.

We can't guarantee that there will be takers, so we also recommend that you rent a car, as you can always cancel later. That way, you won't find your car of choice no longer available.

That said, it should be noted that there is easy taxi service from the airport, so you may not even need a car. Usually, there are plenty of cars to go around.
