Trip Insurance:

We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. Travelex Insurance Services is a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating, where most of the good companies rate a mere A or A-.  Squaremouth.com, a leading comparison site, rates Travelex very high amongst those it lists.  There are six plans.  For a lot more information and the name of our contact person, click here.  Meanwhile, suffice it to say that our travel agent has used Travelex for years.

Travel Help:
There are assorted translation sites, including Babel Fish, and while the freebies aren't perfect, they can help the linguistically challenged.

We also recommend the Lonely Planet Guides. Margo has been traveling with these for decades and finds they have never led her astray. We always encourage people to travel after the workshop rather than before. That way, you can use your new skills to make better photographs!

Accommodations: (Enable pop-up windows for links to work.)
We have negotiated an attractive discount and blocked rooms at the lovely
           Hotel Molino del Arco
           Partido de los Frontones, s/n
           29400 Ronda, Malaga, SPAIN

The rooms are blocked until March 1, 2010 with a check-in date of June 3 and a check-out of June 11. Of course, you can leave the last afternoon or stay longer if you wish, or even arrive before June 3. This beautiful inn/hotel has only 15 rooms, one of which we have already reserved. To take advantage of our negotiated rates, e-mail Maki at Hotel Molino del Arco, info@hotelmolinodelarco.com and be sure to mention that you are with Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures.

  • A 15% deposit is required at the time of booking, but if you wait until the last minute, you will not have as great a choice of rooms.
  • The balance is due three (3) weeks before the arrival date.
  • Cancellations less than 30 days before the arrival date forfeit the first night's rate.
  • Parking is free.
  • There is Wi-Fi.
  • Breakfasts are substantial and are 12,50€ per person, tax included.
If you are comfortable with your Spanish, you could also call 011-34-0952-11-4017 or fax at 011-34-0952-11-4457. The discounted rates are on a first-come/first serve basis. For those who miss out on our selection, check out other possibilities in the Ronda area.

Travel Agent:
Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time consuming as we all search for the best fare.  We have a travel agent that we can highly recommend — Ilene Cox. She is delightful and savvy and has been a travel agent for over 25 years.  She also has access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.

In addition, Ilene has traveled extensively through Europe, Asia and Africa. So, for help with international air and travel-related questions, call Ilene Cox at 800-339-8417.  It is not our custom to recommend outside travel resources, so this lets you know how highly we regard Ilene.

Airport:
The nearest major Airport is Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport (AGP), about 45 minutes southeast of Ronda. MalagaHolidays.com provides transfers and taxis to Ronda from the airport.

Flying with Photo Equipment:
It is always good to check with TSA and your airline before traveling by air.  Currently, TSA regulations note:

"You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint.  The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight.  Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport."

They do remind everyone that not all airlines will allow this, so you may want to select your airline based on thier willingness to work with photographers...

"Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport."

If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee.

Always check back with the TSA website for the latest updates!

Rental Cars:
Because we stop in out-of-the-way locations, and because the roads are narrow with minimal parking, we encourage participants to pool transportation with us. Contact us ASAP if you are interested, and we'll let you know the approximate cost. Besides being practical, it's a blast traveling with others in the group. I can't tell you how much and how hard we laughed last summer!
