There are several files, programs, and settings that you will
need for your upcoming workshop. Please download and install these
onto your computer and check in your camera menu before you
arrive in order to make best use of your time at the workshop.
If you download the programs a week oe less before the workshop,
you will have a chance to play with them afterwards.
Suggested Downloads:
Adobe
Photoshop Lightroom 3.x (You'll
have to establish an account for the free, one-time, 30-day
trial download which is easy to do.)
Lightroom 3.x is a memory hog, so read the information on our Imaging Programs page first.
Optional Downloads:
For those who work in CS5, that we also use, there are a number of plug-ins that we find useful (many have trial versions), including:
AutoPano Pro by Kolor (for panoramic stitches, that I often prefer over CS5);
Denoise by Topaz (to reduce noise in files, overall better than Noise Ninja below but much slower);
Photomatix by
HDR Software (terrific HDR program that has a 30-day trial version with a watermark but that is much better
than Photoshop's feature); it also has a plug-in for Lightroom; and
Silver Efex Pro by nik (great b/w conversion) that also has a plug-in for Lightroom.
While CS5 has incorporated some of these features into its program,
a really good plug-in can make life easier. Often, as with Photomatix,
there is a trial version you can download. These are not required, only interesting programs to explore.
Camera Settings
Don't forget to bring along your camera's manual! For those who find the Japanese
manufacturers' instructions a bit daunting, consider buying the Magic
Lantern Guide for your camera model. They are actually written in English
for English-speaking people by English-speaking people, rather than being translated
from Japanese into English by Japanese. Magic Lantern has manuals for most any
camera. Before you get to the workshop, be sure to check your camera's settings:
For the workshop, you will want your Image quality set to RAW (if your
camera has that capability) — every camera's menu is different, but
you may find this in your Shooting Menu (the little camera icon); for those
without RAW, please select the TIFF setting or highest-quality JPEG if
there is no TIFF;
Select a bit depth of 14, if you have it, otherwise 12;
You will also want to make sure your camera's Color space is set to Adobe
RGB (1998) rather than sRGB — you may also find this in the Shooting Menu.
Monitor Calibration
If you calibrate your monitor, make sure it is set to a white point of K6500
(6500 degrees Kelvin) and a Gamma of 2.2. If this is Greek, don't worry, it probably
does not apply to you!
An introduction to copyright and why it is so important, even for amateurs.
Digital Asset Management
Digital Asset Management, for those who don't know, is the hopefully-efficient process that takes your digital images from your camera to your computer, processes them, and catalogues them. There is a four-part series on
this. Start at the bottom for the first (oldest) article in the series.

Making "Mistakes"
Too often, we are afraid to make mistakes. Without daring to try something
new, we can't move forward. For more on this, read this
blog.
Tripods & Ball Heads
We are always amazed at how many people will spend thousands of dollars on their
camera equipment, then chintz on their tripod and ballhead. Too often, we have
seen people nearly lose their cameras, because they are using flimsy tripods
that are not rated to carry the weight of their equipment. We also see
and hear the frustrations of photographers who don't use a true ball head; instead,
they have one of those two-handled, multi-knob varieties that don't afford the
versatility and speed necessary to effectively photograph. For more on
this, see our
blog on the subject..
Your Brain
Don't laugh! Your brain is one of the most important tools you have. If it is
frazzled and on overload, it doesn't function well. Try to come to the workshop
as rested as possible. It is not always possible in today's frenetic world, but
you will get that much more out of the workshop if you can manage to get some
quality sleep before arriving.
