Trip Insurance: We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. Travelex Insurance Services is a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating, where most of the good companies rate a mere A or A-. Squaremouth.com, a leading comparison site, rates Travelex very high amongst those it lists. There are six plans. For a lot more information and the name of our contact person, click here. Meanwhile, suffice it to say that our travel agent has used Travelex for years. Accommodations: () Please note that we make our reservations the day after the previous year's workshop ends! Zion National Park: We have a block of rooms set aside in the very convenient, smoke-free Bumbleberry Inn (Check out September 4, when we'll move to Bryce Canyon.) 97 Bumbleberry Lane Springdale, UT 84767 435-772-3224 To get our negotiated rate of 123.97 (tax included), call the Inn and say you are with Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. You will not be able to get the discount by calling or going online. The discounted rate will also apply if you wish to come earlier. For those who miss out on the The Bumbleberry Inn, check other possibilities in Springdale. Bryce Canyon National Park: We hav negotiated a very attracted room rate of $99 plus tax (12.3% as of this writing) at the historic, smoke-free Ruby's Inn (Check in September 4 when we move from Zion.) 26 South Main Street Bryce Canyon City, UT 84764 866-866-6616 In order to take advantage of this rate, you will need to go online at www.bryceres.com/rubys and put in the dates for the block of rooms that has been set up (checking in September 4 and checking out September 6). In the field that says "Special Rates" choose Group/Block and in the blank put the code 11G . This code is specific to your group and only works for the web. This will then show you the available rooms for your group. If you wish to call in, ask for the name of the block: Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. For those who wish to stay Thursday night after the workshop, the rates will be honored. Airport: The nearest major Airport is in Las Vegas, NV with a couple of options. Las Vegas is less than three hours from Zion and offers really inexpensive flights. Another option is Salt Lake City (SLC), but that is under five hours to the north. For those who want help with reservations, we highly recommend Paula Jaye at Park Street Travel in Andover, MA. She is delightful and savvy and has been a travel agent for [many] years. She also has access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet. With domestic fares, she does need to charge a fee, but for many, it is well worth it. Call Paula at 978-470-1493 on the east coast or e-mail her at paula (at) parkst-travel (dot) com. (Obviously, you must put this into the standard name@domain.com form.) It is not our custom to recommend outside travel resources, so this lets you know how highly we regard Paula. Please note that in cases where we negotiate special rates with our hotels, you must use our links and make your reservations yourself. Flying with Photo Equipment: It is always good to check with TSA and your airline before traveling by air. Currently, TSA regulations note: "You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint. The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight. Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport." They do remind everyone that not all airlines will allow this, so you may want to select your airline based on thier willingness to work with photographers... "Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport." If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee. Always check back with the TSA website for the latest updates! Rental Cars: Because we stop in locations where the roads and streets may be narrow and parking minimal, we encourage car sharing. If you are interested in sharing a rental car with others, let us know. We'll pool those who respond and get you in touch with one another to make your own plans. We can't guarantee that there will be takers, so we also recommend that you rent a car, as you can always cancel later. That way, you won't find your car of choice no longer available. You should also keep in mind that we will be driving on a lot of gravel and dirt roads.
