Paris, 2016-15

As in Spain, France has its own National Picasso Museum. Recently rennovated, it is gorgeous with clean, modern lines mingling with more ornate architectural detail. Also, it is well organized, leading the viewer from room to room.

Four of us go, and we manage to dodge most of the tour groups. When they are in one room, we back-track to another or scoot on ahead. It is very manageable.

I think all of us are amazed at the breadth and depth of Picasso’s work. For example, I have never been aware of his wood carvings or his interest in African and Native American art.

Like so many brilliant artists, he was drawing, painting, and sculpting far beyond his years.

A lot of his works are untitled, as with this piece that is labeled simply “Figure, Acier Peint, 1985” or steel and paint.© 2016 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. Picasso, to my eye, had a delicious sense of whimsy in many of his works. In these two renditions of “La Guenon et son petit” (The Monkey and her Baby), the left piece is the original in plaster, ceramics, two little cars, and metal, the right in bronze. There is a grand staircase in the museum. Very clean, very elegant. Arnie and I, along with the Picasso head at the bottom, are startled to see a man more absorbed in his smart phone than in the amazing art around him.© 2016 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. We spend several hours at the museum, taking in each section of Picasso’s life in chronological order. Fascinating and well worth a visit for anyone coming to Paris.

It is lunch time. Some have museum feet; I have a museum back. It is good to sit down, have a light bite to eat and some wine. To the side, outside a hat shop, I see this black velvety head with a teal scarf. I think she looks very chic.© 2016 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. The two couples go our separate way for the afternoon, agreeing to meet at the Orsay at 6:30.

We continue through the Marais, the largely-Jewish section of the city. We happen on a little, intimate street, and two young men sit at a sidewalk table. A young lady starts entering the frame.© 2016 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. From Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. Back at the flat, I look up the tickets for the Orsay and find that for this night only, the museum closes at 6. No evening hours! Bit by bit, the whole group returns to the flat,

Arnie and I have a place in mind for dinner, and the other couple joins us. Set below the sidewalk, it is a charming oasis, and the food is fabulous and beautifully presented.© 2016 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. From Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. We order two desserts fo the table but dive into them too quickly for any photos!

Sated, we walk back to the flat. Tomorrow will be another good day, and who knows what it will bring.
