Bonus Day on the Way
These blogs must be short. We are staying in a lovely old inn, stone, white-washed, with black timbers. Richard Jeffries is the charming host and owner of the inn. It is good to be back here.
We met in Glasgow on Friday so that on Saturday we could all load into our two comfy Mercedes Vito vans that would be our transportation for the week. The weather was fierce. Winds howled all night before we left, and it rained and rained and rained some more.
The drive to the Isle of Skye was slow. Roads were flooded in places, but not impassible.
When we crossed the Lochs, we saw patches of snow on the mountains, but what struck us the most were the cascades. All over. The mountains were striped with cascades, the moors were awash, streamws turned into raging rivers, and it was all magnificent and gave everyone a respect for the hardiness of the Scottish people.
After a late lunch at a pub we like, we made a photo stop at Eilean Donan Castle (pronounced AIL’n DUN’n). It is one of the most famous castles in Scotland, certainly an iconic one. Eilean means island, and indeed, the castle perches in a tiny island in the middle of Loch Duich, a long bay snaking in from the sea. At low tide, one can walk down along its perimeter, but the seaweed is treacherous, so it is not safe. There is access by a long bridge, and at high tide, the water runs through them.
For me, what attracted my attention was the light on the water and the layers of mountains beyond. A small white building nestled into the base of the hillside, other buildings across the Loch were more subtle.
