Click here for the instructors' galleries.Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures (BCPA) will be returning to the wonderful and varied Monhegan Island. Monhegan, from Monchiggon, Algonquian for "out-to-sea island" Island, about ten miles off the rocky Maine coast, has been a haunt and artist's paradise since the late 1850s. No wonder. about four and a half square miles in mass, it is laced with some 12 miles of trails that lead you through fragrant forests, along cliff edges, by artists' cottages and charming fish houses, even a weathered lighthouse. Above the raging seas on the Atlantic side, one can sometimes find photographic treasures cast off by some bygone storm.
There are distinct aspects to this island, so you will not get bored, the charming village, woodland trails (do bring bug repellant), flowers, craggy coastlines, fishing boats off shore, and plenty of artists, many famous in the art world. And don't forget the famous Maine fir trees, "Land of the Pointed Firs," that add wonderful elements to the coastline.
The workshop will be headquartered at an inn right near the ferry, and the staff will bring your luggage up to the hotel for you.
As mentioned in other Maine workshops, and as many of our alumni know, the Barefoot Contessa grew up sailing this area, so knows it well. She looks forward to introducing you to special places where you'll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.

After the workshop, plan on taking an extra few days to explore this area on your own, return to places you have visited on the workshop, and use your new-found knowledge to make more beautiful images. Or come early, if you are also coming to Summertime on the Maine Coast afterwards.
Remember that Mother Nature has a mind of her own, so come prepared. There may be some terrific opportunities. And for those who have not seen it, check out my updated YouTuve video: "Blue Skies, Who Needs'em.
When making your plans, it is critical that you plan on arriving on time.
Meanwhile, be sure to carefully read BCPA's FAQs, as well as the various links in the box above. They should hopefully answer almost any question you might have.

Accomodations
We have saved a block of rooms at the historic, smoke-free, harborside hotel.
Monhegan House
300 Port Clyde - Monhegan
Monhegan, ME 04852
207-630-4649
Monhegan House is very popular, and rates include a yummy full breakfast with accommodations made for dietary needs. Hotels, B&Bs and inns fill up quickly, particularly on such a small island, so we highly recommend making your reservations ASAP after you sign up. At this time of year, hotels have no need to negotiate.
If you do have to stay at another place that does not include breakfast, I highly recommend that you contact Monhegan House and arrange to pay for breakfast with the rest of the group.
To make reservations for Monhegan House BCPA Group Block, check out this link. Some rooms have en-suite bathrooms, while other have shared ones.
The rooms that are blocked are on the first and second floors. The top floor can get pretty hot depending upon weather.
You can change to a room outside of the block IF there are any available. To do so, contact the hotel at the number noted above. Also, and again depending upon availability, you may wish to extend your stay at either end of our workshop and let them know you are calling about the BCPA blocked rooms for August.
Airports
Knox County Regional Airport, Owls Head, ME (near Rockland) (RKD), 26 miles and less than a half hour from the ferry in Port Clyde (highly recommend the Laura B) Portland International Jetport, Portland, ME (PWM), 68 miles and a bit over an hour and a half from New Harbor, or 61 miles and around an hour and a half from Boothbay Harbor. Manchester–Boston Regional Airport, Manchester, NH (MHT), 161 miles and around three hours from New Harbor, or 154 and 2:30 to 3 hours from Boothbay Harbor Logan International Airport, Boston, MA (BOS), 168 miles and between 2:50 and 3:40 hours from New Harbor, or 161 miles and 2:40-3:30 away from Boothbay Harbor. In Boston, you can walk all or part of The Freedom Trail.
There is bus service from Logan to Damariscotta, a roughly three-and-a-half-hour ride, and from there, you can take a taxi down to New Harbor for the ferry over to Monhegan Island. For those who are not coming on to Summertime on the Maine Coast, Boothbay Harbor may be the better bet, as there is ferry service from there to Monhegan.
Ferry
The only way to for us mere humans to get to Monhegan Island is by ferry or boat. Taking the ferry is, for me, delightful, as one often sees dolphins, porpoises, puffins, seals, etc. All the ferry captains are very good about taking detours to share these treasures.
Round trip reservations (usually managed in two one-way tickets) are mandatory, and should be made as far in advance as possible. You will also need a parking pass, but all of that is on the individual ferry company websites.
It will depend upon your travel plans which ferry make sense for you. My favorite, and the classic one, is on the Laura B of Monhegan Boat Line out of Port Clyde that I first used back in the early 80s. More recently, because of the back-to-back workshop with Summertime on the Maine Coast, I use the morning Hardy Boat Cruise option out of New Harbor, returning on the 3:15 afternoon run. The trip takes about 50 minutes. Finally, for those bussing up from Boston, Balmy Days Cruises out of Boothbay Harbor may make more sense, even though the trip from there takes longer (but the parking may be cheaper).
For all ferries, I recommend you book early. I have already booked mine!
Car Rentals
Since Monhegan Island is a walking island, a car will not do you any good once you get over there. If you are staying for Summertime on the Maine Coast, that is a different matter. For more information, see the Travel page.
Scout & Shoot
Because this workshop follows on the heels of Summertime on the Maine Coast, there are no options for any scout-and-shoot options.
