North Carolina, along with Virginia and Maryland, was once one of the three most imporant producers and exporters of tobacco. During the Colonial period, in fact, the crop was often used in lieu of currency in those colonies.

The old log and tumble-down drying sheds and barns hold great fascination for many people, and many have asked me to do a workshop on them. Thus, this last-minute addition to the BCPA Calendar.

It will be a mid-week workshop with four (4) photo shoots and the usual critique sessions. We will be visiting several of these old structures within driving distance of where I live in North Carolina.

Because of privacy issues with the landowners, I will not be publishing the location of these structures, and to honor that, I ask that no one puts these locations into their records. Landowners do not cotton to the idea of hordes of people invading their privacy to snap a picture of one of their sheds or barns.

This workshop will not involve really early mornings or late evenings. Not only do we not want to distub the owners who have been kind enough to grant permission to photograph on their land, but because these structures are often located where there is uneven footing, we don't want to risk anyone's life and limb. Instead, you may want to play with black and white, as that is perfect for situations either where there is harsh light or you want to add drama to a drab, grizzly-gray day.

I live in a pretty part of the state with many back roads that meander through farming country. You may find things other than sheds and barns that strike your fancy, including details. In any case, you'll be able to to celebrate your passion for photography, seek your own vision, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.

When making plans, it is critical that you plan on arriving for the first session on Monday. Newcomers should be ready to go at noon, while seasoned alumni can wait until 12:30. Times may be modified on the latter closer to the workshop.

Meanwhile, be sure to carefully read BCPA's FAQs, as well as the various links in the box above. They should hopefully answer almost any question you might have.

Fees:  Standard $1,090 | Alumni $928 | Association $982 | Because of the late addition of this workshop, the fee is due in full with your application.

Travel insurance is highly recommended to ensure protection against any unforeseeable events.
BCPA is a small company and cannot be held liable for those who choose not to buy trip insurance.  Sharon Erickson, My trusty travel agent, can help you with that. And, no, we do not get any credit for referring you to her, only a thank you!
