I have always been fascinated by the stark, yet sometimes lush, landscape of the badlands in the Dakotas whose striking geological dsposits contain some of the world's richest fossil beds. In fact, this land was roamed by ancient horses and rhinos.

The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie and an abundance of wildlife, from Bison Bison (Latin name for Buffalo), Big Horn Sheep, prairie dogs, and even black-footed ferrets.

Pair that with the geology and varied colors, and there is much to tempt the photographer's eye. This was the land of the Sioux until the white man stole their lands and broke treaties. Before that, Native Americans had roamed and hunted on this land for 11,000 years, enjoying the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States.

The name "Badlands" comes directly from the Lakota who for hundreds of years referred to these lands as "mako sica" or "bad lands." When you combine the heat of summer, arid nature of much of the area, the "gumbo" that durin rains makes travel near impossiuble, and canyons that defy passage in many areas.

You may want to stay an extra few days after the workshop, not only to practice your new-found or recently-honed photographic skills and eye, but to return to areas that intrigued you or to explore new ones.

You'll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, seek your own vision, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.

When making plans, it is critical that you plan on arriving for our first session on Sunday. Our newcomers should be ready to go at noon, while our seasoned alumni can wait until 1:00. The latter time may be modified depending upon the make-up of the workshop.

Many participants tend to stay over the night that the workshop ends, and for those who want to join us, we usually go out shooting and dine one last evening together.

Meanwhile, be sure to carefully read BCPA's FAQs, as well as the various links in the box above. They should hopefully answer almost any question you might have.

Fees:  Standard $2,180 | Alumni $1,856 | Association $1,964 | Twofer Discount in combination with the Palouse | Early-bird Special @ Association rate — both discounts only by check (see parameters)

Travel insurance is highly recommended to ensure protection against any unforeseeable events. BCPA is a small company and cannot be held liable for those who choose not to buy trip insurance.  Sharon Erickson., my trusty travel agent, can help you with that And, no, BCPA does not get any credit for referring you to her, only a thank you!
