An Update to a 2010 Blog
As we sit at the table, doing our work, finishing up hotel arrangements for Europe next year, it has been raining cats and dogs, sometimes even dinosaurs and elephants. I was reminded by a recent comment on my original Blue Skies, Who Needs’em blog that inclement weather can make for some amazing images. This one is a case in point, and it is one of my all-time favorites and one I never tire of seeing. We are hoping to see a sky like this during our September Colorado’s Fall Colors workshop here.
Our workshops have produced many other examples that I’ll share.
Sailors generally don’t like fog. It’s hard to navigate in it, at least in the old days before GPS and Loran. I am a sailor, and I have always loved fog. It calms the waters, and I have fond memories of going to sleep on my dad’s boat and hearing the groaners out in the bay. I still hear them from our room on the harbor during one of our workshops. In the little fishing villages, the fog even muffles the deep thrum of the diesel engines as they load bait and head out to set or haul traps.
Paris is known as the City of Light. It sparkles, even in the driving rain. There is a reason we return here every year for a workshop. Earlier this summer, we went down to our favorite corner café almost every morning to sip café-aux-lait and watch the world go by. The rain certainly did not deter us. I found color in the lights and umbrellas.
Hurricanes? Absolutely! Last fall, with Superstorm Sandy lurking offshore, making its way slowly up the coast, the Outer Banks were largely spared. Sure, there were gusts, and the cameras welcomed protection, but we knew where to find shelter. Our workshops participants couldn’t wait to photograph in it. Both these images have been juried into shows. Both appeared in The Yin and Yang of the Outer Banks exhibition that is seeing another showing at CatchLight Gallery in West Jefferson, NC in November.
