…or Seek Your Own Vision
We just completed another photo workshop in the Moab area of southeastern Utah. This is canyon and arches country, split into two different national parks. It is magnificent country, and as with many such locations, there are iconic scenes.
So many people want to capture those same-old/same-old scenes that you see in the just-another-pretty-postcard shots. That is not being creative. Buy the postcard, then do your own interpretation of the scene, as Arnie and I have done…
Mesa Arch is one of the classic scenes, probably the signature one for Canyonlands National Park. In photographs, it looks much larger than it actually is, and there are not many places to stand and capture an image of the arch. It can also be a zoo with all the hoards that arrive to watch the sun rising over the LaSals. The sun rises; they leave; and we have the place mostly to ourselves. Arnie chose this view.
Balanced Rock is one of the iconic locations in Arches National Park. There it rises out of the sandstone, but how to make it different? The Milky Way cooperated for me that night, as did passing car and other light sources.
There is an area around Courthouse Tower that is often photographed … either the Tower of Babel or the Three Gossips for starters, common images in this location. Arnie took a totally different approach with this photograph.
Back in Arches at Balanced Rock, there is so much more to photograph than just the iconic rock. I scouted around until I found an old piece of “driftwood” that was the right shape and in the place for what I had in mind.
So, the next time you visit in a much-photographed location, try for something different … a different approach … a different view.
